It is an act of love, in our time, to take upon oneself the creation of a truly human personality. Hazrat Inayat Khan gives an introduction to a range of qualities which are necessary for the accomplishment of this work. Will power, gratitude, self-control, gentleness, self-respect are among the topics addressed, along with directions that may enable the reader to develop these qualities in everyday life.
In the lectures that make up Creating the Person, Hazrat Inayat Khan has traced the essential lineaments of a wise demeanor. Ethically exacting but never doctrinaire, Hazrat’s teachings portray a manner of being that is within reach of all of us if we would only aspire to it and stay the course…Creating the Person is a book for everyman-and everywoman.
In Hazrat’s time “a man” was understood to mean “a person,” and “he” was the expected pronoun when the subject was unspecified. Conventions have since changed. Omega Publications has accordingly taken the thoughtful decision to produce updated editions of Hazrat’s works, replacing masculine formulations with gender-neutral ones. I believe my grandfather would have given his blessing to this approach. He did say, after all, “I see as clear as daylight that the hour is coming when woman will lead humanity to a higher evolution.” He also said, “If you will preserve my words as I have spoken, it will be as saving my life.”
Thankfully, the lectures contained in Creating the Person are preserved, exactly as given by Hazrat, in Complete Works of Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Hazrat Inayat Khan, 1923 II. – from the foreword by Pir Zia Inayat-Khan
